Applet
A program, normally small, that will perform a certain task. Java applets are now common place on the web creating scrolling text effects, interactive buttons and online chat rooms.

ASCII
(American Standard Code for Information Interchange) - The world-wide standard of code numbers used by computers to represent all the upper- and lower-case Latin letters, numbers, and punctuation. There are 128 standard ASCII codes, each of which can be represented by a 7-digit binary number, 0000000 through 1111111.

ASP Active server pages
Active server pages are pages written in a Microsoft scripting language that are often used for database creation. Unlike normal web pages asp pages are usually created in response to a users input, like the pages that are created as a result of database query.

Auto responder
This refers to a feature of e-mail that will send an automatic reply to an e-mail received by a specific e-mail account. Examples of this include vacation messages where the e-mail sent is saved but an automated reply is sent out saying that the user will reply in person when he/she gets back from vacation.
