| Backbone |
|
Backbone is a word often used to
refer to the physical connections of
the internet. The backbone is a
collection of high capacity cables
that connect most of the major
cities in the world to the internet.

|
Bandwidth is the amount of
information that can flow to a
certain point on the internet. ISP’s
usually categorize this as either T1
or T3 to indicate the amount of data
that can flow to and from their
servers. Bandwidth has also come to
mean the amount of data that an

month often measured in GB’s or

|
The baud rate of a modem is how many
bits it can send or receive per
second. |

|
(BINary HEXadecimal) - A method
for converting non-text files
into ASCII files. This is
required because Internet email
can only handle ASCII files |

Bit |
|
Smallest unit of
data either a 1 or a
0, and on its own a
single bit has no
use other than
telling whether
something is on or
off, but when you
combine bits they
can provide the
power needed to
perform any task.

|
A pointer to a Web
site of interest.
Within browsers,
pages can be
"bookmarked" for
quick reference,
rather than
remembering and
typing the complete
URL in the address

|
A software program
that is used to view

on the WWW.
